Flatts is a small historic village on Bermuda’s North Shore, centered around Flatt’s Inlet, a narrow waterway connecting Harrington Sound with the Atlantic Ocean. The village is known for its colourful houses, waterfront setting, small docks, and views across the sheltered inlet. Its compact layout gives it a distinctly maritime character, with boats moving through the channel and restaurants and shops gathered close to the water. Flatts is also home to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, making the village an important place for learning about Bermuda’s marine environments, wildlife, geology, and island ecosystems.

Flatts is regarded as one of Bermuda’s earliest settled areas, and its location on a navigable inlet made the waterway important to local maritime activity. The surrounding community reflects Bermuda’s blend of African, British, Caribbean, and seafaring influences, visible in its architecture, food, and traditions. Bermudian houses are often distinguished by white stepped roofs designed to collect rainwater, while pastel-painted walls and limestone construction are common features. The village’s waterfront setting also preserves the connection between everyday community life and the sea, with docks, small boats, and fishing activity forming part of its local identity.

Flatt’s Inlet is the village’s central natural feature, with a strong current carrying water between Harrington Sound and the Atlantic. Public docks provide places to watch turtles and spotted eagle rays moving through the channel, while the nearby Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo features reef fish, sharks, rescued sea turtles, harbour seals, and a large living coral reef exhibit. The Bermuda Railway Trail also passes nearby, offering access to North Shore landscapes and historic railway features. Crystal and Fantasy Caves are within the surrounding area, adding underground limestone formations to the village’s coastal and marine attractions.

Flatts has several places to sample Bermudian food, including seafood, fish sandwiches, codfish and potatoes, and the island’s distinctive fish chowder, traditionally seasoned with black rum and sherry peppers. The village and nearby Bailey’s Bay are also associated with local drinks and casual island dining, including the rum-based Rum Swizzle. One of Flatts’ unusual features is its position beside a tidal inlet rather than directly on an open beach, allowing visitors to observe marine life in moving water close to the village. Its combination of historic settlement, wildlife attractions, and a working waterway makes Flatts a distinctive part of Bermuda’s North Shore.
